Whisby Nation Wins the 2014 Jeju Dirty Dozens Tournament!

posted Apr 19, 2014, 8:28 AM by Renegade Ulty   [ updated Apr 19, 2014, 8:29 AM ]

Three years ago in 2011, Whisby attended Jeju as a club team representing Taiwan for the first time. That year, they lost to IKU (of Japan) on universe point in the finals. This year around, Whisby came in as the No. 1 seed and held seed through the weekend, eventually beating IKU in finals, 15-13.

Congrats to Whisby! MVPs were Cloud (Whisby) and Tamir (IKU), while Will Chen was one of the Mythical Twelves.

Manila Spirits X 2013

posted Nov 22, 2013, 1:18 AM by Renegade Ulty

Taipei was well-represented at the tenth (!) Manila Spirits last weekend in the Philippines:

Katherine played on Ninja Cowboy Bear (finishing 7th/8th in the A pool)

Tim played with Mixed Nuts (Manila mixed champions for the A pool!)

Jess, Austin, Joanna, and David rocked the B pool with Huckuna Matata:

Yi-wan of MIT (Ultimaholix) played with Shiok, finishing 4th in the B pool, and Tainan made an appearance with 毫-Cool.

But this year, the tourney wasn't all about frisbee-driven fun. In light of the recent devastation wrecked by Typhoon Yolanda, the Taipei expats collected almost 50kg (over 100lbs!) of food, towels, toiletries, clothes, and more to donate to the tournament's relief efforts. Additionally, Whisby Nation raised over PHP10,000 (TWD$7,000) from jersey sales, and 100% of the profits were given to the relief cause as well. Well done, people!

With almost 30 teams from all across Asia Pacific and Oceania joining at the 2013 WFDF Asian Oceanic Ultimate Club Championships (AOUCC) in Singapore, Taipei club team Whisby Nation upseeded with a 6th-place finish. Congrats to all the players!

Taiwan Seasonal Tournament: Hsinchu

Huge congrats to the Whisby/Dreamer team that won Taiwan's season tournament against MIT this past weekend. An initial hole of 0-3 was difficult to overcome, as was the zone thrown by MIT. But in a weekend full of tough games, they dug in and rallied back, learning to use patience en route to a final victory - all good things for these WN players. Also, congrats to tournament MVP Yi-hui!

Hong Kong Hat 2013: Noah's Ark

posted Jun 17, 2013, 8:09 AM by Renegade Ulty

The aptly-themed Noah's Ark was flooded by the rain through and through. This hat tournament was comprised of 10 teams of varying colors and complementary names (Green Gorillas, 50 Shades of Gray, Battleship Navy, Mick Jagger (maroon), and more), with 7 Taipei players scattered amongst them: Laura, Timmy, Rosie, Katherine, Joanna, Jess, and David. Shout-out: It was the first international tournament in Asia for the last three players and Laura's last tournament in Asia (at least for a while!).

Taipei was certainly represented in the awards ceremony. In addition to Laura and Rosie taking their team (Black Rain) to victory over Orange, Jess and David were also named into the Mythical Seven ranks. Well done!

Five of our Taipei club team Whisby Nation's players represented at the annual Shanghai Open June 1-2, 2013. Playing as part of mixed team Chairman Xiongmao, the fab five - Alicia, Timmy, Katherine, Laura, and Ginger - helped boost the team to finals before losing by just a cut to Shanghai Huwa, 15-12.

Sweet representing from Taipei!

Ginger for a sick grab in the endzone

Congrats to Dreamers Unrestrained by Limits (captained by Britt) for winning the Taiwan Open 2012 tournament! Their final score against DS Japan was 13-6. In third place was MIT-Ultimaholix.

Taipei sent another expats+foreigner team in Renegade, captained by Carroll. Thanks to players from Korea (Scott and Jennika) and Singapore (Mervyn) who joined!

Highlights

Special congratulations to A-han and to Nadine (from Singapore), who won Male and Female MVP for the tournament based on their super awesome finals performance. Also, Rashan made it as three-peat Taiwan Open champion, and Kuohsun snatched a nasty Callahan from MIT in the semis. And as this was Britt's last tourney in Taiwan and Asia, we wish him luck in his return to the US and all his future plans.

Manila Spirits 2012

Taiwan was represented in two teams: NTSU (comprised of the university team from Linkou, Taipei County) and Whisby Nation (the club team captained by Britt). Whisby Nation was seeded No. 3 and swept 4 games on Saturday, but their run to the finals was unfortunately ended by Ninja Cowboy Bear on universe point in quarter-finals. Whisby finished 5th overall. Congrats!

Back row: Britt Mercadante, Wenjun Wang, Gingging Chen, Kerry Clark, Cloud Lee, Katherine Tse, Laura Berman, Tim Martin, Bobo, Yoshio Leeper, Nick Fothergill. Front row: Meimei, A-han, Kuohsun Wang, Mango, Ting-yi Su, Will Chen, Rosie Anderson, Nick See.

NTSU played in Pool B. For many, it was their first time abroad and their first international tournament, and they had the opportunity to play against a bevy of foreign teams.

Singapore Ultimate Open 2012

Taiwan sent 9 players to 3 teams this year at Singapore Ultimate Open. Rejoining last year's champion team Mo'chi were Britt and Katherine, and first-time players with Mo'chi included Laura, Kuohsun, A-han, and Tingyi. Playing with another ringer team, Firestarters from Indonesia, were Summer (Xiatian) and Yi-hui. Tim played with Balut, a ringer team from the Philippines.

Firestarters
In Pool C, Firestarters had a strong start on Day 1, going 3-1 in their pool, and they gave Shiok A and Lagi Shiok (Shiok B) a tough run starting in pre-quarters on Day 2. Their last game on Sunday was against Chuckies (Singapore), ending their day 0-3.

Summer and Yi-hui

Mo'chi
As last year's champion, Mo'chi was looking to defend its title and started off with a 4-0 record on Saturday against Zero Displacement (Singapore), Mulatto (Philippines), Shiok (last year's runner-up champions), and Balut (with Tim!). In pre-quarters on Day 2, Mo'chi handily defeated SMU and then Zero Displacement in quarters, setting up an intense semis game against TP (Team Philipinas), the same team that had just played in Worlds in Japan in July. TP snagged a few breaks from the beginning, though, and in spite of a number of strong comeback plays from Mo'chi, the game eventually resulted in a heartbreaking loss to TP, who proceeded to defeat Shiok on universe point in the finals to become this year's SUO champions.

Fantastic playing from everyone at SUO. The next international tournament for Taiwan is Manila Spirits in mid-November - we'll be represented on two teams! STOKED.

[Edit: Firestarters went 3-1 on Day 1, not 0-3.]
